I Can't Relate Anymore
Over the weekend I had dinner with 3 friends in the City, all lawyers.
I knew them from my law firm days, and it had been a while since we'd all gotten together. Ever since I went in-house and started this long commute, it's been hard to coordinate schedules.
We've known each other since we were first year associates. But it's been a while, so now all of them are pretty senior in their firms.
That means they've got more and more responsibility. And they're nearing partnership, which spurns them to work even longer hours for the prize.
It used to be that when we got together we'd all complain about the partners we worked for and how awful the hours are, and how we had no lives outside of work, and how there was no chance for advancement in a firm unless we played the game the way the men did, etc.
This time, the three of them continued as always, with a list of grievances and complaints.
But I found that I had little to add.
Having left firm life, and no longer having an evil senior partner to complain about, seriously curtailed the material I could add to the conversation!
So I found myself saying things like, "Well, uh, I just got my green belt in tae kwon do! And gosh, my Grandmaster is demanding!"
