A Mini-Break

Thank you all for the bloggy love you've been sending me for the past few days.

I have lots going on right now. I rarely blog about my personal life, but suffice it to say there's a lot of turmoil in it.

I'm tired, worn out, run-down, heartbroken and just plain exhausted.

I'm going to take a mini-break to regroup. Trying to feel better physically, emotionally and spiritually.

It's not you; it's me. I'm going to try to relax, get some sleep, and get into the Christmas spirit.

I think Jesus was trying to send me a message that day he came to visit me in the church pew. I'm going to take his advice and retreat into my shell for a week or two, and let him watch over me.

Don't worry; this is not good-by. I'll be back very soon, and I'll be my old self. I promise.

Hugs and kisses, and I'll see you in a very short while,

THB

Gimme Some Tussin!

Thanksgiving was lovely. The long weekend and the days off were lovely.

The only hitch was that I'm still trying to get over this horrible cold that's been afflicting me for nearly two weeks.

I can't seem to shake this hacking cough. I've been drinking lots of cough syrup and walking around in a drug-induced haze.

In mass yesterday, I swear Jesus sat right next to me and said, "Peace Be With You."

Or else it was a hallucination brought on by the cough syrup. I'm not sure.

I went for a walk in Central Park after mass.

I left a cough drop on the ground at the Strawberry Fields Memorial, next to the "Imagine" letters.

It was for John Lennon's spirit, just in case he's also caught whatever ailment happens to be going around these days.

Thanksgiving Eve Eve

It's been a crazy two weeks!

I'm coughey and fluey, and yet have taken no time off from work, in an attempt to get it done with one final push and then CRASH.

Well, I've arrived. I'm home from work, and I'm going to sleep for the next 14 hours.

The Sister and her boyfriend are arriving tonight. Tomorrow we'll chill.

Thursday I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 5 people!

Among them are a couple of Europeans who are experiencing their first American Thanksgiving.

Where they come from, nobody has an oven large enough to hold an entire turkey. To eat an entire bird of that proportion is disgustingly, foreignly and uniquely American.

I'm really looking forward to initiaiting them into the tradition!

Mmmmm...turkey...

Worth the Wait

One night earlier this week, I went to an electronics store and saw people lined up outside awaiting the midnight official release of the newest video game console.

Having never been a hormonal teenage boy (or pretty much anyone else in the developed world for that matter), I don't know much about video games.

When I was 7, my parents got me an Atari 2600 for Christmas. But I never had anything after that.

So upon seeing this crowd of people camped out in the rain, my first thought was that they were waiting in line for Cabbage Patch Kids. Or Tickle Me Elmo dolls.

That shows you how behind the times this old lady is!!

At any rate, I marched straight through the line and went into the store, where I found my dream purchase: a combination printer & copier & scanner & fax machine! Woooo..

Here it is still in the box. Those are my feet, and I'm wearing my comfy pajama bottoms.

Fancy purchase, and I didn't have to wait in line in the rain!

Tired

I have the world's worst sore throat.

Apparently, the changing seasons have made my allergies go haywire, and caused my entire sinus cavity drip into the back of my throat.

For the past 2 days it's been unbearable, despite massive quantities of tea and sore throat spray. And lozenges.

I have to give 2 presentations today. I honestly don't know how I'm going to get through it.

American Sign Language? Pantomime? Interpretive dance? Coughing in Morse Code?

Overachievers

I just read with interest this article about how they're thinking of revamping the U.S. citizenship test.

It made me think of a funny story that my Dad loves to tell, about back when he and my Mom took their citizenship tests, in the early 90s.

He said that they both studied for it, and both went in feeling pretty good. Their English was pretty good, they'd lived in the U.S. for almost 20 years, and they were prepared. And people told them that it was a fair test; not too hard.

When they came out, he said my Mom seemed really depressed.

She was really quiet in the car on the way home.

Finally he asked her, "Do you think you did ok?" and she gave him a really sad look.

"I don't know!" she almost sobbed. I think I really messed up!"

They drove home in silence.

Suddenly, at an intersection right before they got home, she randomly yelled, "Delaware!!! That was it! I couldn't remember the 13th original colony! It was Delaware!"

Apparently she'd been able to list the other 12 original colonies.

It turned out that she got something like 99% on that test. Delaware was the only thing she missed.

My Dad loves telling that story.

And you wonder where I get my nerdliness from?

Eat, Drink and be Merry
Over the weekend I discovered this brand of ramen.
I can find them only in this one tiny little store in Koreatown.
Nowhere else. I bought several containers, and I ate them ALL.

Who needs cooking? Who needs restaurants? I have everything I need now.
Mmmmm....

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Over the weekend I was hanging out in the suburbs, waiting for my mechanic to do some routine work on my car.

Since I had an hour to kill, I wandered around a local strip mall, and decided to get my nails done. So I walked into a nail salon.

As soon as I walked in, the woman who was standing at the front counter looked at me and snapped angrily, "Sorry, the manager isn't in today. And we're not hiring!"

Then she glanced over at a coworker, snorted and rolled her eyes. As she turned to walk away, I called after her, "Uh...well, actually I'd like get a manicure and a pedicure."

She turned around, and her face turned totally red. She was so embarrassed. She quickly apologized.

I could have been angry or offended by what she did.

But I didn't get angry. I just laughed.

She felt so bad about it that she ushered me to a pedicure chair quickly. She made sure I got a special spa pedicure for no extra charge. And she gave me coffee and cookies while I was waiting.

And I saw her appraising the the generous tip I gave the nail lady. And glancing appreciatively at the American Express Gold Card I handed her for payment.

Right before I left, she confessed to me that she actually was the manager.

Some of my friends said I should have been meaner to her, or told her that her actions were prejudiced and rude. Or gotten her name and written an angry letter to the owners. Or walked out the place and refused to give them my business.

But I think I did the right thing. I was nice and friendly. Maybe that accomplished more than getting angry would have?

And maybe she assumed I was looking for a job not because I was Asian, but because I was dressed down (casual, with jeans and a t-shirt, instead of in my usual intimidating lawyer suit). So I should actually be flattered that I look younger than I am?

I have no idea. I feel weird about the incident, but I'm not sure it was a big deal. I still can't decide.

The Muck and Mire of Politics

This is an emotional post for me.

Yesterday I voted.

I meant to vote in the morning, but I overslept, and then had to do the long commute to and from work.

Then I had to work late, and by the time I got to the public school where I vote, it was half an hour until it closed. I was one of the last people to vote.

But I did it!

Then I did my usual Election Day ritual - I went home and had a glass of wine and watched my DVD of Iron Jawed Angels.

By the end, I was bawling, as I always end up when I watch this movie.

If you don't understand why, watch the movie! Hilary Swank gives an unbelievable performance.

After you've seen it, you'll understand why I vote. Why we should all vote.

I'm getting emotional just thinking about it again.

The Long Journey Home

On Sunday I watched the New York City Marathon.

A couple of my friends were running it, so I went to the East Side to watch them running down 5th Avenue in the last 4-5 miles.

Afterwards, I had trouble getting home. I made the mistake of walking through Central Park. It took me over two hours to get back to the Upper West Side!

It seemed that the entire West Side was barricaded. So I took the long route home.

I walked through The Ramble, and saw some birds and nice autumn foliage. And I enjoyed the view of the New York City skyline from my vantage point:

I enjoyed a lakeside view (if you look really closely across the water, you can see the runners finishing the Marathon in the exact spot I was trying to reach, but couldn't quite get to):

Then I came upon this makeshift bridge, which seemed to be the only way from the East Side to the West Side:

It took me an hour of standing in line in the pushing, irate crowd to get across! Here's a picture of the marathoners as they finished the race, from the top of the bridge. Pretty impressive. Oh, and the group of people to the right of the photo are all of the people who were behind me in line trying to get across that bridge!! Pretty insane.

So I finally got home way later than I'd planned. Whew!

I think I was more exhausted after that trek than the people who ran the marathon! I went home, took a hot bath, put bandages on my blisters and had a cup of tea.

Hugs!

Something strange happened at work.

When I got into the office yesterday morning, I saw that somebody had left a teddy bear on my desk.

I have absolutely no idea who would have done it. Nobody else in my department knows, either. Or will own up to doing it.

One of my coworkers suggested, "Maybe you have a secret admirer!"

I did have a stressful week last week, though. So maybe someone saw that I was stressed, and left me a friendly gift to give me happy thoughts.

It made me smile.
