Monday, August 27, 2007 ( 7:25 AM ) teahouse Priorities in Order I have to leave town again for another business trip. Hopefully this will be the last trip of its kind for a while. I know a lot of people enjoy it - the paid travel expenses, the nice hotels with the free fancy meals. But I HATE traveling for work. Anyway, I have to prepare a presentation. But funny enough, that's not worrying me at all. I'm more concerned about who's going to feed my fish while I'm gone! # 0 comments Wednesday, August 22, 2007 ( 9:55 PM ) teahouse Midlife Crisis Well, I am still here but haven't posted again since my return. Until now. The truth is, I'm ashamed that I lost my digital camera and can't post any photos of my Central America trip. I was going to make a huge deal out of revealing the COUNTRY I visited along with the photos. But I'm a lame-o, so you'll just have to wait a few more days while the film develops to find out. What have I been doing since my return to the US of A? Stressing out about the fact that my birthday is coming up; I'm going to be THIRTY TWO. For some reason, that number is really wigging me out, much more than 30 ever did. Have I really accomplished by age 32 all of the things I wanted to? When I was 5 years old, I thought that by this age I'd: (1) have a couple of kids, (2) live in a house with the coolest backyard treehouse in the neighborhood and (3) be able to eat all of the chocolate I wanted to all day. Well, (3) is true, I guess. I have been eating a lot of chocolate this week, because I just re-read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and I keep reading about how he eats chocolate to regain his strength after trying the Patronus Charm. So when I read that, I want chocolate. I need to keep up my strength, too, like Harry. Oh, and I'm going through a career crisis of sorts. What am I doing and why am I here? Would my 5-year-old self be proud of where I am today? "I'm not a lawyer, but I play one on tv..." # 0 comments Sunday, August 19, 2007 ( 9:46 PM ) teahouse Return to El Norte And we're back! What a fantastic trip to Central America! It was my first time there, and it was quite an experience. Here are some highlights from my trip: 1. We had the BEST refried beans I've ever had in my life. I told myself, "Wow, this is what they're supposed to taste like!" Nothing like the light brown pukey mess that you get in Tex Mex restaurants in the United States. I could swim in a vat of these refried beans for hours, just letting them soak into my skin. Yumyumyum. 2. We climbed an active volcano! It was unbelievable..we walked right up to where the lava was flowing right past us. It was a grueling 4-hour hike, but totally worth it. 3. It was rainy season, so it rained almost every night. And I got eaten alive by mosquitoes. But I slept well. I always sleep well to the sound of rain. 4. My friend who was getting married is one of the nicest and least aggressive people I know. But lemme tell you, when it came to this wedding, she went off the DEEP END. She was a total bridezilla, running around and screaming at everyone like a banshee. She couldn't relinquish control!! Even during the ceremony (it was a Catholic mass), while she and the groom were kneeling at the altar, she was turning her head and barking orders at people! 5. Not that I really blamed her for being stressed. Everything that could have gone wrong during this wedding, did. It rained through the whole ceremony. People went missing and never reappeared. The bride got herself locked out of her hotel room in the middle of getting dressed. The maid of honor refused to wear the ugly bridesmaid dress and got her own, which clashed with everyone else's dress. Someone forgot the rose petals for the flower girls. They started screaming during the ceremony, drowing out both the thunder and heavy rainfall AND the musicians (who were out of tune anyway, so it wasn't that tragic). The table full of presents was right under the leaky ceiling, and got soaked with rain during the reception. The pens for the guest book ran out of ink. The caterers made the bride and groom the cake at the beginning of the reception. Somehow, someone in the dancing crowd at the reception produced a pinata. Pieces of paper mache were flying around, and when combined with the slippery residue left on the floor by the smoke machine, caused the bride to wipe out while dancing. The best man never got to give his toast. Half the guests never received invitations to the morning-after brunch. The dress wouldn't bustle and had to be held together with duct tape and staples. The whole time, my Fiance was walking around taking notes in a little notepad. He is committed to making OUR wedding run more smoothly than this one did. Wish us luck! Oh, and I lost my digital camera, so you'll have to wait for me to get my old-fashioned photos developed before you can see any pictures of this trip.. # 0 comments Thursday, August 09, 2007 ( 11:27 PM ) teahouse Apocalypto The Fiance and I are leaving for a weeklong trip to Central America for a friend's wedding. To prepare for the trip, my friend suggested that we rent and watch Apocalypto. So we did. And yes, it provided beautiful scenery. So now we're really excited about the trip. I'll be back next week, and I'll hopefully have some photos to share. That is, if I can find my digital camera in the pile of junk that is my apartment!! # 0 comments Monday, August 06, 2007 ( 10:30 PM ) teahouse The Great Melting Pot Thanks to everyone for your well wishes. Yeah, my car is pretty effed up. It's in the shop getting new spark plugs, fuel injectors, oxygen sensors and a catalytic converter. It's in pretty bad shape. I've been begging coworkers for rides to the train station since last week. Boooooooo. This weekend the Fiance took me out to dinner to get my mind off the car issues. We went to this locally owned place known for homey comfort food. I ordered some side dishes on the menu that looked yummy: "Mother's Baked Beans" and "Granny's Coleslaw." I asked our waiter whether he recommended them, and whether they were worth the hype. "Oh yes!" he exclaimed. "They're both really fantastic dishes!" "Who's mother and grandmother made these dishes? The owner's" I asked. "Well," he replied, lowering his voice and gesturing toward the kitchen. "It's actually Pedro's baked beans and Juan's coleslaw...but they're delicious nonetheless!!" # 0 comments Thursday, August 02, 2007 ( 7:58 AM ) teahouse Roadblocks on the Highway of Life Well, I'm back. And totally stressed out. My legal conference was fine. Except for the part where I drove to it, and getting gas at a rest stop on the Interstate, I accidentally filled up the gas tank of my brand new car with DIESEL FUEL. The car is now at the mechanic's, where the gas tank was drained, the fuel injectors were flushed and the spark plugs and oxygen sensors are being replaced. I blame myself for not paying attention, but hey - it was late at night, and dark, and I was tired. And part of me blames Exxon. The diesel pump wasn't clearly marked, it was in the middle of the unleaded pumps, and the nozzle was essentially the same (I've been told that most diesel pumps are a different shape for just this reason - to prevent confusion). It's a funny story, I guess...it was really funny when the Fiance and the Sister had to get out of my car and push it, like it was an old jalopy. # 0 comments |
