Anybody have recommendations for good commenting systems that are free? It looks like I might be able to do my comments through Blogger going forward. So maybe I'll try that. In other news, I'm updating my blogroll. I have some old readers who have stopped blogging/shut down their sites and the like. If you are still reading this, and want me to continue linking to you, give a shout out. Happy almost-February! I'm counting the days until spring... # 4 comments Wednesday, January 27, 2010 ( 9:09 AM ) teahouse Gender Bended The Husband is a very artistic guy, and he does community theater, opera and the like. Last weekend I went to see him in a local performance of show that one of his friends wrote. He played the role of the mother of the main character, and hence was required to dress in drag. He wore a head scarf, a dress and even wore lipstick. As I walked into the theater and saw a large poster of him dressed up like this, I couldn't help but feel really strange. On the one hand, he looked silly dressed as a woman, and it was good for a laugh. But on the other hand, I found myself strangely and unexpectedly attracted to it. Yes, in a weird way, I was both drawn in and simultaneously repulsed. Looking at the photo, the subject had features that were familiar and somewhat attractive to me (which makes sense, since he's my husband). But in another way, he clearly looked like a woman. And I'm pretty sure I'm straight. Or am I? Then again, don't get me started on the slight resemblance to my mother-in-law. Ahhhhh!! Is this normal? Or am I right to be disturbed by an aspect buried somewhere in the depths of my psyche that I have just discovered? # 1 comments Saturday, January 23, 2010 ( 9:59 AM ) teahouse Baby Boom My friend M had a baby two months ago. My friend K is expecting her second baby next month. My other friend J had a baby last weekend. My coworkers C and S just announced last week that they're both expecting babies this year - in July and August, respectively. My other coworker B went on maternity leave last week, and sent an email yesterday announcing that her baby was born the day in the morning. I had lunch with my good friend E yesterday. She told me that she's, guess what - pregnant! It's raining babies! Everyone keeps asking me whether I'm next. But I figure with the natural chaotic and entropic order of things, it's pretty much impossible that ALL of us can have babies at the same time, isn't it? # 1 comments Monday, January 18, 2010 ( 7:01 PM ) teahouse A Day Off Today was the U.S. federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I stayed home and spent the day alone, since the Husband is out of town. I am recovering from a bad cold. So I took it easy in the morning - I spent it in my pajamas on the couch, watching movies on BET - including The Color Purple and a documentary on Rosa Parks. Then in the afternoon, I bundled up and wandered around my neighborhood. I snapped this photo of a building on my walk. Maybe it's just me, but isn't it odd to have an OTB place sharing an entrance with a yoga studio? The clientele would be quite different. And OTB places are generally noisy - does that interfere with the yoga classes? Does anyone ever accidentally stumble into one, intending to go to the other? Are they owned by the same people? Or maybe there are people who gamble, and then after losing they go next door to take a yoga class to relax and accept the fact that they've lost?

My forehead is one big, dry, peeling mess. Even my HANDS are chapped. 3. Christmas is over. No more vacation. No more Santa Claus for another year. 4. Since it's the beginning of the new year, my 401k and Social Security tax are being taken out of my paycheck again. My first paycheck of the new year was depressingly small. 5. I feel guilty whining my paycheck in #4 above, given that I'm lucky to have a job in this horrendous economy. 6. I ate too much over the holidays, and the cold makes me eat more, and now I have a pot belly I can't get rid of. 7. Because it's past Oscar season, there are no good movies showing. 8. Every day of January, I'm reminded of how I haven't kept my New Year's resolutions. Brrrrrr!!! # 0 comments Friday, January 08, 2010 ( 12:03 AM ) teahouse The Past Two Years in Texts One of my resolutions for 2010 has been to make an effort to throw out the old to make room for the new. In view of that goal, I was going through my cell phone tonight, deleting old text messages. As I scrolled through the list, the posts provide a snapshot of my life from the past couple of years. Some of them are from me to other people, some are from them to me. But I've listed some of my favorites below. Some may not make sense to a casual reader, but all are meaningful to me. And each is a tiny tidbit of my life that reminds me of a funny experience or special day. Van coming for bridesmaids in 15 minutes! You ready? Obama! So happy. Crying happy tears. Dumbledore really is gay! Yeah, your husband is a tough nut to crack. Got a new job! I had enough of working for Kim Jong-Il. How are you? Better not be eating meat on Fridays during Lent. Coming home early. Stripper slapped my ass and I'm traumatized. I can't believe you made us miss our flight to our honeymoon. I'm at Penn Station. Where is he? I swear, if he makes me miss another plane I will strangle him! Brass band playing in front of Alice Tully Hall! No, I'm not pregnant..my big news is that I got a new secretary! Umbrella broke into pieces, went flying on subway. Bring me another? Getting drunk with my boss at dive bar. Back in an hour. I'm parked out front, next to Jesus. # 0 comments Monday, January 04, 2010 ( 10:00 PM ) teahouse Behind the Times Happy New Year, everyone! It's so hard to believe it's the year 2010 already. Didn't we all think that by the year 2010, we'd all own flying cars, and the human race would be colonizing Mars? When I was a kid, I thought that by 2010, I'd be happily married, have at least a couple of kids, be a famous rocket scientist and live somewhere cool and exciting in a big, beautiful house with a Volvo parked in the garage. 2 out of 5 isn't bad - I am happily married, and I do live somewhere cool and exciting. But no kids yet, and we live in a tiny little apartment with no garage and no car to speak of! And I am happy being a lawyer - I think being a rocket scientist would have been tough. I couldn't have predicted all of those NASA budget cuts. Which also explains the as-yet uncolonized Mars. Happy New Year!
