The High Speed of Technology
The Husband and I are looking at new cell phones for our shared cell phone plan.
Both of us are Luddites when it comes to cell phone technology. We both just got phones with text messaging about 2 years ago.
We still have basic phones - that is, they look like phones. They have touch pads on the front that look like phone touch pads.
They don't have browsers or cameras. They don't play music or videos. You can't Google things on them.
Unfortunately, they've both gotten really old and decrepit in the last month, and now we need to replace them.
We walked into the store today, and we were overwhelmed with the options.
Do we want "smart phones"? Do we want touch screens that respond to our fingers? Do we want web browsers and access to Facebook and Twitter? Do we want phones that play music and videos and can also film us dancing to the music?
There were kids running around in that store who had headsets hooked up to their phones, who were simultaneously watching videos and talking to their parents and instant messaging with their friends.
I was so exhausted afterwards, that when I got home I turned out all of the lights, closed the curtains on the windows and sat in the dark and quiet for a while, just decompressing from the sensory overload.

Same thing here ;-) I have an old, decrepit phone that does phone calls and text messaging and not much else. And I never missed any potential additional functionality.
You can still buy that kind of phone new, though! My parents have one and they're cheap and simple :)
iPhone had me at hello!
I don't even have a cell phone. I'm totally lost. I used to have one but I just don't like people calling me whenever they want. Now they have to call me at home. Last weekend I told the kids I don't even like people doing that. They thought it was funny.
wow, they're that advanced now. whew. glad intrepid explorer you went where I won't.
see I just want my cell phone to call people, that's it
I love my iPhone--for everything except calls, which is problematic. Luckily, I don't really like to talk to people anyway, so it hasn't been a problem for me.
If you don't need the fanciness, I'd go with a solid carrier (if there is such a thing) and one of their free, "dumb" phones. Get a smart phone, and my guess is you won't be sitting in the dark and quiet anymore--you'll be playing brick breaker until the wee hours.
I LOVED this! The last paragraph so cracked me up. Very poetic too.
I hope you have recovered??
I do love my iPhone and would wish one on anybody! Unlike RM I sure do use it for calls!
Oh, and check you out -- you done went with the Blogger comments. Cool!
xo
