Tuesday, August 03, 2010 ( 12:39 AM ) teahouse Sinister and Gauche During my commute home tonight, I ran into an old acquaintance on the subway. I hadn't seen or heard from him in about 4 years, so we spent a few minutes catching up. He told me that in the last 4 years he'd gotten married, had a kid and then split up with his wife. His daughter is now three years old, and his ex-wife has custody of her, but he sees her 3 days a week. "She's growing so fast," he said. "And I'm just worried because I don't live with her, and my ex is fighting me for every minute of visitation. And I just feel nervous about not being enough of a presence and good influence in her life." He continued, "For example, I think she's going to be left handed. She picks things up, and does things, with her left hand. I try to fix that, but I'm not with her enough to keep teaching her the correct hand to use." Uhh... Seriously, I did a double take. "What's wrong with being left handed?" I asked, incredulously. "It just doesn't look right!" he insisted. "I try to remind her when I'm with her, but there are only so many hours each week I'm with her, so when I'm not around, who knows what my ex lets her do!" Before he could say more, we arrived at his subway stop. "Ok, great talking to you! We should hang out sometime!" he said brightly, and stepped off the subway. Leaving me speechless, with my mouth hanging open. I swear, I couldn't even make up a story like this. # 13 comments 13 Comments:
"What's wrong with being left handed?" Yeah, and just like that, the ex trying to limit his visitation rights doesn't seem so crazy. :-( Sad. By Patricia Elizabeth Arriaza, at 8:02 AM Um...if one of my clients called and said that their ex was trying to force the child to be right handed instead of left...there is a good chance I would ask the court for a psych eval...weird. Very very weird. I am, however, convinced that divorce makes people insane, even if temporarily.
A left handed celebration:
Hm. Wonder why he's divorced. I hope for the kid's sake that she doesn't turn out to be gay.
First I'm right handed now for my 2 cents... Whoa! It's a fairly outdated practice, forcing children to use their right hands. This may not be scientifically proven, but I've heard it can be detrimental to do that - causes anxiety and other problems. It also just seems mean to make her use her other hand when she naturally wants to use her left! Besides, being left-handed is awesome! Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush, Ross Perot, Bill Clinton, Morgan Freeman, Hillary Swank, Jimi Hendrix, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Joan of Arc, Paul McCartney, Jim Henson, and Kermit the Frog are all left-handed!! Celebrate International Left-hander's Day on August 13! By 3:56 PM , atOh That is just sad. It is difficult to imagine anyone thinking like that in this century. My daughter's father has come up with some interesting ideas - mainly that she doesn't ahve thoughts and opinions of her own (the kid is nearly eleven) but I can't see him trying anything like that. !!!!!!! OMG... I'm right-handed and have always thought left-handedness is sooo cool & special in a very good way. Poor kid. that is so weird. In Australia, actually, being left-handed was a sign of the devil |
